Effect of
Annexation on Our Local Schools
QUESTION: Will city annexation change the
way my local schools are operated?
Daily administration will not change.
QUESTION: Are there any county versus city
policies that would effect how Sulphur Springs Union Elementary
School District and the William S. Hart Union High School District
operate the schools that serve Stonecrest?
Yes. The City has a historic policy of demanding far more in the
way of funding and cooperation from developers than does the County.
This significant difference has the effect of keeping schools far
less crowded thereby ensuring higher quality education for the student
throughout the entire area. Being in the City would ensure a far
greater chance that our local schools would not become overcrowded.
QUESTION: Will the mega sand and gravel
mine (CEMEX) have an effect on the local school children?
Yes. All seven Santa Clarita School Districts are on record as opposing
the mine. The School Districts have invested considerable funding
on their part in opposing the mine.
The County is legally committed to letting the mine operate as originally
proposed.
The City continues on with its strong opposition.
The County will do little or nothing to protect
our children. The City, however, will be able to exert maximum effect
to regulate the mine, if the mine is in city jurisdiction.
QUESTION: Have the school districts asked anything specific
from the mining company to protect our children?
Yes. The School Districts made an extensive list of demands, all
designed to attempt to protect our children’s health. The
mining company (CEMEX), the County, and the federal government ignored
each and every request made by the school districts.
Should the mine come into the jurisdiction of the
City, the City will do everything possible - working with the School
Districts to ensure our students’ health and safety.
